Latinx

Community

COVID-19 has affected all types of community in a major ways but it has affected the Latinx community in many more ways. Primarily with employment and financial issues. This is very important because many people might not be getting their essentials because there isn’t enough money for food, their house mortgage and the house utilities like electricity, gas, etc. Many students have relied on eating at school. Now, with schools close it's difficult for some of those students to eat along with their families to eat. Education is another one. Many people might not have needed items like wifi which is a necessity and without this it difficult to educate themselves without assistance.

I interviewed a group of people on how they were affected by Covid-19 in healthcare. These were the Results:

  1. How often do you attend the doctor, for check-ups or other situations?

    • The overall answer was that they went to the doctor once or twice a year for physicals exams. If they went more than once or twice a year it was because of an illness.

  2. Do you feel like you’ll get the help you need from your doctor after the pandemic?

    • Everyone said that they felt that they would receive the help they needed from their doctor after the pandemic. Some people mentioned how they were scared that someone at their doctor might have the coronavirus and make them sick. Others mentioned that their doctors will be busy and it might be difficult to get an appointment.

  3. Has COVID delayed any exam or surgeries you or your family may need?

    • From all the people I interviewed only 4 had no issues with delayed exams or surgeries. But the majority had issues like getting their wisdom teeth removed which was delayed to August. Others had things like cavity removal and MREs rescheduled to other times of the year.

  4. Has your family’s health been affected by COVID or any other sickness?

    • Luckily COVID-19 and other illnesses didn’t affect many people but one person I interviewed had a family member pass away last month because of the virus. Someone else was affected but they didn’t specify from what.

  5. Have you been able to go to the doctor during the pandemic? If so, explain how. If not, When was the last time you went to the doctor?

    • Many people that I interviewed didn’t see their doctor during the pandemic and the last time they had seen one was January, February, and last summer. But the rest of the people had to go to the doctor and they explain how they had to wear masks and gloves and wait in the car until it was their turn.

  6. Do you feel like you need to see a doctor after the pandemic has ended?

    • The majority said that they didn’t think they had to go see their doctor after the pandemic. But some said they wanted to and needed to. They wanted to make sure there wasn’t any change in their health and other people had to go because they had to get their shots that are needed before going to college.

  7. Do employment or financial issues ever prevent you from seeking the care you need?

    • The majority of the responses said that employment or financial issues didn’t prevent them from getting the care they needed although they did say that it might limit some of the care they got.
